Overview

The Medical Services, Director provides strategic and operational leadership for Medical Services within a complex, matrixed environment, overseeing physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical and administrative staff in a dynamic healthcare environment. This role ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, financial sustainability, and operational efficiency while fostering collaboration across all healthcare partners. The Director of Medical Services is responsible for the administrative management of Medical Services in compliance with state laws, federal regulations governing hospice patient care and The Joint Commission standards. With broad accountability, this role ensures that patient care needs are met through effective leadership, coordination, and oversight of provider performance and healthcare delivery.

 

The Elizabeth Hospice is San Diego’s oldest non-profit hospice of 45 years.  We are growing and looking for talented individuals to join our high performing team and support our mission.  We serve all of San Diego county and south Riverside county with multiple hospice office locations.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. 

Salary: $140,000-$175,000 annually. Subject to experience and qualifications.

Work Location: Escondido, CA

Travel may be required

Responsibilities

  1. Applies demonstrated expertise in healthcare management of the Medical Services department, including the palliative care department and medical group management.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge and ensures compliance with laws, regulations and health care standards, including but not limited to, policies and procedures that align with HIPAA regulations that protect patient health information.
  3. Establishes and manages processes and procedures to ensure smooth day-to-day operations serving both internal and external customers in the major healthcare systems of San Diego and southwest Riverside Counties.
  4. Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Medical Services team, including oversight of processes related to patient scheduling, billing and record-keeping to ensure confidentiality and management of access control.
  5. With guidance from the President ESMS / Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of The Elizabeth Hospice, establishes, implements, and enforces Medical Services Standards of Practice, policies, and procedures and sets workflow priorities to ensure stakeholder needs are met.
  6. Collaboratively recruits, interviews, hires and orients new Medical Services staff.
  7. Collaboratively supervises the Medical Services staff, including training, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of performance.
  8. Collaborates with Directors and staff of The Elizabeth Hospice to ensure medical staff, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and other Medical Services clinical staff are equitably deployed to achieve patient care and education outcomes.
  9. Collects, analyzes, and reports statistical information on Medical Services quality, budgetary, and billing outcome data.
  10. Ensures all Medicare Part B, Medi-Cal and Commercial payer requirements for billing / quality reporting are met for Medical Services care delivery.
  11. Participates in the organization’s Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement Process through preparation and participation in audits, inspections, and the accreditation process including implementation and monitoring of corrective action plans related to identified deficiencies and/or audit trends; participates in month-end billing review and documentation monitoring for all Medical Services
  12. Oversees the department’s communication and coordination with customers such as other departments, the public, other physicians, and outside organizations to improve customer service.
  13. Manages the interviewing, contracting, and onboarding process of all new physicians to Medical Services with oversight from the President of ESMS / CMO of The Elizabeth Hospice.
  14. Develops correspondence, reports, and materials for publications and creates presentations to support Medical Services
  15. Develops annual budgets, monitors budget variances and is accountable for results.
  16. Monitors utilization and productivity of personnel, coordinates follow-up of employees involved in worker’s compensation in collaboration with the Human Resources Department.
  17. Oversees the physicians and nurse practitioner scheduling processes, including ‘on call’, including medical fellows, medical resident and medical students and other health professions students in collaboration with the Education Department staff.
  18. Under the supervision of the President, ESMS / CMO of The Elizabeth Hospice, facilitates the collaborative practice of nurse practitioners with physician staff for purposes of direct medical care to patients.
  19. Works with the President, ESMS / CMO of The Elizabeth Hospice, to strategically plan, develop, and implement new programs and processes in response to new developments and changes in the internal and external health care environments.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in healthcare management, Health Administration, Nursing or healthcare-related field required. Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Business Administration  (MBA) or Master’s Degree in other healthcare related field preferred.
  2. At least 5 years’ healthcare business management experience with a medical practice, clinic, or hospital strongly preferred.
  3. Experience in palliative care is preferred.
  4. Demonstrated mastery of medical group operations, regulatory compliance (including HIPAA) and practice performance improvement is preferred.
  5. Demonstrated skill in developing and negotiating contractual arrangements with external stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications and the ability to learn Medical Services software applications required.
  7. Positive and professional verbal and written communication skills required.
  8. Demonstrates professionalism and mastery of communication with all levels of management and personnel, excellent interpersonal skills.
  9. Work requires attention to detail, excellent organization skills and discretion with confidential information.
  10. Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule with occasional travel.
  11. Current California driver's license with proof of insurance.
